Here we go,

We are knee deep in the Christmas season and, true to form, commercials are telling us, once again, why we need more “stuff” in our lives.

Now I’m not going to tell you to eschew buying things, but I am going to ask you to start giving things.

A lot of them.

For two reasons.

Number One? Go through your home and clean it out. All the “stuff” — old clothes you don’t wear, electronics you don’t use, even kitchen gadgets simply getting dusty from a lack of use.

Give them a new home — sell them on eBay or even donate them to a charity. This time of year, so many folks need things (as they unfortunately do any time of year), imagine what it would be like for them to have the chance to get those older items that may not mean much to you but could bring joy to them?

If you haven’t used it in six months (or a year in the case of your “winter” clothes), do you really need it?

Number Two? Simple! Most of these items you’ll donate may give you a nice little deduction for tax purposes. If you weren’t happy about the tax bill last year, then charitable donations may help you to round your bill down a few hundred more dollars — and feel good doing it!

As Americans, we all too often look to material things as examples of our success as individuals, but the reality of it — and we can all use this time of year to remind ourselves — is our greatest strengths lie in how we help others.

All the best-
